Conversion to Shia Options

Famdigy, i read somewhere that you converted to Shia'sm. Can you tell me how and why?

Any one else that has converted to Shia'sm please tell me your stories.

i have heard of a few (mostly in syria) tho.



ps i dont think there will be many on MO except ToyibaOnline and famdigy.

Converts to Shia on MO? theres quite a few actually. And theres quite a few converts to Sunni.

In fact, i think we have a super high % of converts.

Well, I was born in Ethiopia, my parents are mixed Yemeni and Ethiopian. We lived with my grandmother for a few years while my father was looking for work in Saudi Arabia, eventually he found a good job and we moved to Jeddah. Ironically my fondest memories are from growing up in Saudi. My father prayed at the masjid regularly so as a young child I would go with him on weekends and weeknights. After school I attended the Local Quran memorization lessons at the masjid. As foreigners me and my brothers were not allowed to continue our education so we moved to Canada in my early teens.

As immigrants we really didn't know anybody here and didn't have any contact with a Muslim community so I slowly started to stop practicing until eventually I stopped all together. I knew inside I was on the wrong path but I think I was too far preoccupied with western culture to come back. The turning point came when I started a high school that was right beside a masjid in a Pakistani community, I quickly made Muslim friends and started to get involved with the masjid activities. I became attracted to a sunni group called "Tablighi Jamaat", they basically strived to live out the sunnah of the prophet () and companions, They would often go out on prolonged excursions to mosques around the city and country that kept them away from home anywhere from 4 days to 4 months at a time and once I went for 40 days. We attended many masjids across the city, and would basically pray, eat, sleep at the masjid. All this time they would read and lecture from a book called "Fada'il e-Amaal" and for 40 days I was grilled down about the virtues of the companions and how great they were. While I liked their spirituality and humbleness I found they repeated the same things over and over as they kept reading and teaching from that book.

That high school is also where I became acquainted with an Iranian shia student. A group of us Muslim boys would often hang out at the masjid during lunch and after school, and sometimes we would discuss shia-sunni differences, I didn't know any of that at the time but I found it interesting and was convinced that some what my Iranian friend was saying was incorrect. During my time at the high school we discussed many different issues from the Quran, hadith, and history. Luckily for us the Sunni masjid had very good collection of history and hadith books which we used to reference. At this point I began to have serious doubts about the sunni way but the biggest difficulty I had was accepting the companions whom I saw as "shining stars of Islam" were just like the average person now, I mean how could the companions who were with the prophet all the time and sacrificed their wealth and lives become evil hypocrites? Eventually I read al-muraja'aat, peshawar nights, and Tijani's books by this point it was very clear to me that many of the companions who's status I had admired were superficially inflated. In fact, history paints a very different and dark picture of these personalities.

One night after having visited the local shia center several times I decided to embrace the path of the Ahlul-bayt (as). I found there was a very particular sweetness to the lectures and discussions about the Ahlul-bayt (as) that I have never experienced while I was sunni, I was captivated by the story of Imam Hussain (as) and never again will a lecture at a sunni masjid be the same. I often wondered why I didn't know this earlier and why was it that the sunni speakers never mention Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hussain (peace be upon them all) but mention the companions all the time, why is it they don't mention the story of Imam Hussain (as).

Eventually my family knew and they were all against it. My mother was the first that started reading the books I brought home, then my brother. Alhamdulilah both are now shia Muslims.

I'm not sure what you mean by pure love into hate, are you reffering to the companions? I admired all of them but I wouldn't say it was pure love besides I believe some of us now are better than some of the companions

My parents reacted with the usual. Shias pray to stones. They believe Ali should have been the prophet bla blah blah. My aunts husband is Palestinian and he was against it but at the same time amused by my enthusiasm.

alaykoum! I am from Norway and convert to shia.First I read about only sunni since there were no books about shia in the libraries in my homecity.Then I got to know about shia through the iraqi boyfriend I had(we had mutah but now I regret about it that we had mutah but then I didn't know really what it was).I got some books to read from his friends and then I became convinced that shia was the right.I converted some months later.I learned 2 suras before I became muslim cause I was interested. It didn't work out with this iraqi guy.He ended the relationship after 14 months.This is long time ago.Was in 1994.Now I am married to an Algerian man who mashallah is a shia too.A very strong one alhamdulillah.But even when he was sunni he had great love and respect for ahlul al bayt.Never said any bad words about shia.Mashallah.The people where he comes from have more respect for imam Ali a.s than they have for Abu bakr,Umar and Uthman.Mashallah.He is berber and has told me that originally the berber people were shias,not sunni.

may i ask why do you regret the Mutah that you had with a iraqi boy? didnt you know what Mutah exactly was? and what did your parents say...
