To whoever is reading this topic.

I have realized that sunni's call Imam Hussain's father HAZRAT ALI AS however shia regard him as IMAM ALI.. I was wondering what is the reason behind this.. or If I am mistaken myself and that we can also say IMAM. Please provide as much detail as possible whether it be opinion..quotes..hadiths..

Your knowledge is appreciated.

The "hazrat" is a cultural thing, only brownies use the term. Its just a sign of respect. You could use "hazrat" for any of the companions of Rasulallah pbuh.gif or any of the prophets and messengers of the past. E.i, Hazrat Isa AS.gif, Hazrat Nuh AS.gif, Hazrat Abu Bakr ra.gif. But it isn't necessary.

Sunni's don't call Hazrat Ali ra.gif "Imam Ali" because imam's are regarded differently in Sunni and Shia beliefs.

For Sunni's, an imam is a scholar who leads prayer at a masjid. You can ask him for advice or ask an imam with a different opinion for advice. Doesn't matter. They aren't infallible. Just people who have studied Islam extensively and can be found at your local masjid.

Shia's don't follow the caliphates. Instead of Abu Bakr ra.gif, Umar ra.gif, Uthman ra.gif and then Ali ra.gif leading the Muslim ummah, they believe in 12 imams, starting with Ali ra.gif as the first. The imams all descend from the lineage of Rasulallah pbuh.gif. Shia's believe that the 12 imams are like guides for Muslims and that these imams themselves are guided by Allah (SW). During their lifetime, the imams interpret the Quran and decide on fatwas that have to be followed.

Thats why Shias call Ali ra.gif "Imam Ali" and Sunni's dont. Sunni's dont follow the 12 imams.

I'd quote hadith like you asked, but the split did not occur until the ruling of Ali ra.gif which was, of course, after the death of Rasulallah pbuh.gif.

If any Shia's read this and see something wrong with what I said (the shia bit), feel free to correct me, it's what a Shia friend of mine told me.

Exactly which culture did the use of Hazrat come frome, and What is a brownie. Just wondering

Here is my attempt at the answer. Hazrat is usually used for someone who has lived their life in the way of Allah and or died for the sake of Allah.

As for the Imam Hussein RA question i don't know I've never thought about it. But I'll say i use it because that is how they are referred to in Hadith. I don't know any shi'a so cant speak on that aspect

Its cultural aspect. Why do 12ers call Khomeini Imam Khomeini or Ayatollah Khomeini but they call a bigger scholar like Shaykh Mufid Shaykh instead of Imam or Ayatollah.
