The controversy comes from this line:

2.62 . Lo! those who believe ( in that which is revealed unto thee , Muhammad ) , and those who are Jews , and Christians , and Sabaeans whoever believeth in Allah and the Last Day and doeth right surely their reward is with their Lord , and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve .

In my opinion, sometimes they can go. Here is what Yusuf Estates had to say about it:

QUOTE
In order to properly understand the answer we must first supply a basic understanding of what the words in Arabic mean. The key to correct understanding in this matter is to keep in mind that Arabic is a root driven language based on a verb structure.

Look to our website page on this subject at:

http://www.islamtomorrow.com/word/

You will be able to better understand the difference between ISLAM as a verb as opposed to ISLAM as a noun, inshallah.
To give a brief summary of ISLAM as a verb:

ISLAM - means doing what Allah wants you to do and doing it in surrender, obedience, sincerity and peace, according to His Commandments and Rules.

MUSLIM - means a person who is doing the action of Islam - meaning a person who submits to Allah on His terms and does so in complete peace without resisting Allah's Orders.

The first Muslim was Adam, peace be upon him, and then many more came after him. Some were called "Hunafah" (not to be confused with the followers of Abu Hanifah), this was a very long time before Moses, peace be upon him. Some were called "Jews" (Yahud in Hebrew) and then came "Christians." But all of them were at the same time, "Muslims" because they were doing "Islam." In other words they were doing what Allah had commanded them to do and they were sincere in their worship to Him and only to Him without any partners.

This means that anybody could be in Paradise as long as they were doing "God's Will" and not worshipping something other than Almighty God.

The statement, "None shall enter the Paradise except Muslims" is true, only if you understand it in the above context.

There are some verses in the Quran that make it crystal clear:
"Inna deenah, inndallahil Islam."
(Certainly, Allah will only accept Islam [submission to Him on His terms in peace] as a way of life for anyone.)
[surah Al Imran 3:19]

"Wa ma yabtaghi ghayril Islama deenah, fala-yuq bala minhu, wa huwa fil akhirati minal khasareen."

(And whoever desires a way of life other than what Allah has command, He will never accept it from them and in the Hereafter they will be amongst the loosers.)
[surah Al Imran 3:85]

Al yawm ya-isa allatheena kafaru min deenikum fala takhshawhum waikhshawni.
This day (at this time) those who disbelieve (in Allah) have given up all hope of your DEEN (way of life - ISLAM), so do not fear them, but rather fear Me [Allah].

Al Yawma akmaltu lakum deenakum wa at mamtu alaykum nia'matee wa radeetul lakum ul islama deena.
This day, I have perfected your DEEN (way of life) for you, completed my favor upon you, and have chosen for you ISLAM (submission to Allah) as your DEEN (way of life).

[Surah Al Mai'adah 5:3]

The prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, "I swear by the One who holds my life in His Hands (Allah) there is none amongst the Jews and Christians who hears about me and then dies without believing in the message with which I have been sent (monotheism of Islam - believing Allah is One and we must submit ourselves to His Will on earth), except he will be of the people of the Fire (Hell).
[Sahih Muslim, Book of Faith, Vol. 1, hadeeth 240]

Allah also says:
"Inna allatheena kafaroo lan tughniya AAanhum amwaluhum wala aw laduhum mina Allahi shay-an wa olaaa-ika as-habun-nari-hum feeha khalidoon."
(Surely, those who reject Faith (disbelieve in Allah and in Muhammad, peace be upon him), neither their properties, nor their offspring will benefit them anything against Allah. They are the dwellers of the Fire, therein they will live forever.)
[Surah Al Imran 3:116, tafseer At-Tabari, Vol. 4, Page 58]

We should now be able to understand that the One and Only True God of the universe has made it clear, He has a Way of Life (DEEN) already laid out for us and if we accept it and act on it to the best of our ability, then we are in the right way (ISLAM). And certainly, it is not based on being an Arab or speaking Arabic or any other culture or language. It is not about skin color, ethnicity or race. It is not about what the world labels us but rather what is in our hearts.

The heart is a precious comodity to Allah and He is the Judge of the hearts. We can not say that someone is from the Paradise of the Hell-Fire. We can only say what types of beliefs and actions would bring a person closer to either place.

I hope this has been helpful for you in better understanding who are the people of Paradise and who are those of the Fire. May Allah accept this and keep us away from the Hell and grant us His Paradise in Jennah, ameen.

Salam alaykum,
Yusuf Estes

However sometimes I believe that they can go to heaven. There is a hadith that I cant quite find that says that Allah sometimes will take people that are hellbound out of hell.

The heart is the realm of Allah (TWT), and I believe He chooses those with a good heart who worship Him in proper manner, or at the very least acknowledge the existence of a higher being, even if they were born into an isolated or non-Muslim family and never hear the revelation.

Right. If a person is good enough to go to heaven but was never exposed to Islam, then maybe right before he dies Allah can show him the revelation.

I think if a person is "good" and has contributed to society in a beneficial way then why not let them into paradise?

Assalamu alaikum (Peace be upon you)

I THINK GOOD PEOPLE IN NON BELIEVERS WILL NOT GO TO NEITHER HEAVEN NOR HELL. GOOD PEOPLE OF THEM WERE AT A PLACE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL SUCH LIKE EARTH AND THEY WILL LIVE ALWAYS AT THERE WITH SOME JOY AND SORROWS. BAD PEOPLE OF THEM AND US WERE GO TO HELL....

Asalam alaikum

As for the issue of whether a person was never exposed to Islam or never heard of Islam:

What about someone who never heard of Islam?
Allah is the most just. Don't even think that we can be nicer than Allah. Allah is the Most Just, and He said in the Koran "We were not to punish till having sent a warner". The "We" here is the majestic we used in Arabic. So if a person never heard about Islam, and was never warned clearly Allah would have a special test for that person that He knows is equal to the chance that person would have had on earth.

We must acknowledge first and foremost this ayah:

"We were not to punish till having sent a warner"

furthermore, I would like to add on the issue of whether non Muslims can go to Heaven. I have already fallen on the issue of whether a person was never exposed to Islam.

It's necessary for us to understand what makes a believer in Islam and what constitutues 'good deeds' in Islam. Read the following ayahs carefully:

4:123. It will not be in accordance with your desires (Muslims), nor those of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereof, and he will not find any protector or helper besides Allah.

4:124. And whoever does righteous good deeds, male or female, and is a true believer [ i.e. a true believer in the Oneness of Allah (Muslim)], such will enter Paradise and not the least injustice, even to the size of a Naqira (speck on the back of a datestone), will be done to them.

In the first ayah i provided, it clearly states that regardless of being a muslim or non-muslim, the evil works carried out should be made up for.
Now the second ayah, Allah subhana wata'alla tell us that a person enters Paradise if they carry out righteous deeds and is a Mu'minun (a true believer in the Oneness of Allah, doesn't associate partners with Allah, worships none but Allah, whoever submits to the will of Allah) Who can be a Mu'min? Answer: Those who believe in Allah and accompany their belief in all that Allah commanded the believers to do and have acted upon the obligations that Allah ordained!

Therefore, in order to enter Paradise, one must believe in accordance to Islam and do righteous deeds in accordance with Islam, because Allah (God)'s chosen religion is Islam which he ordained all mankind to follow:

4:125. And who can be better in religion than one who submits his face (himself) to Allah (i.e. follows Allah's Religion of Islamic Monotheism); and he is a Muhsin (a good-doer - see V.2:112). And follows the religion of Ibrahim (Abraham) Hanifa (Islamic Monotheism - to worship none but Allah Alone). And Allah did take Ibrahim (Abraham) as a Khalil (an intimate friend).

Going to heaven will not be in accordance to the desires of humans, it will be in accordance to the belief and righteous deeds in Islam. Therefore adherence to Islam is very important if one wishes to be saved in the hereafter.
Allah the most Exalted made it clear in the glorious Qur'an:

5:3…..This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…..

3:85. And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.

5:72..Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and the Fire will be his abode . And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers) there are no helpers.

I hope that clears it up!

Well than i guess according to 3:85 im not going to islamic paradise =)

Never thought you were the kind of guy that would accept anything out of context.

Guess I thought wrong.

Anyway, those who desire hellfire, thats what they'll get.
Repentance isn't bound to this world, even after the day of judgement, It is said that one may still repent.

My, how people ignore Surah Al fatiha, and the first ayah of the Holy Koran.
"Bismillahi ar rahmanir Rahim"

Unless you know 3arabic, you should never look at an Ayah and say its pretty clear.

The only written in stone rule of Islam about the Islamic Concept of Hell is that,

Those that Wish to dwell in the Fire Will.

If you don't want hell, then don't act like you want it.
Don't neglect the responsibilities of a human in this world.

Put the need of the community above your own, and you'll soon find that there won't be many people that can call you a sinner.

Peace.

Should us ignorant humans even be debating on this subject - surely it is up to God to choose who enters Heaven or not? Surely we should not judge others?

We're not so Ignorant that we can speculate based on the law he has sent down.

One who has truly spent his time trying to better his community, using a means that would not destroy another, could hardly be judged wrongly now could he?

QUOTE(chailvr @ Feb 5 2008, 07:35 PM) *
Al'din, that is a great selfless life but none of us can know IF there is a god (conclusively, 100 percent) much less if one can go to 'heaven' or not if there in fact is one.

He could be a drinking, pork eating, weed smoking, homosexual and do those things, yet still have committed lots of sins including sodomy.

The Question is assuming that there IS a God and that there IS heaven.
So I refuse to go off topic and touch some of the other things you've said.

If one is truly selfless in action, One would think about every act one did, and that by itself would eliminate so many of what we call sins from the mind.
Drinking sodomy, pork eating, weed smoking, these are things of personal pleasure and do nothing for your brother.

Even if you don't believe in a God, you can at least fathom some respect for the human identity and the state of humanity as a whole can you not?

So why enjoin in things that would do more to harm than to help?
