Yes i found difficulty too sometimes. Many Imams have their own point of views and suggestions on situations and history. But i prefer to follow Quran instead of people sayings. You also should follow one Imam which you think is the true one.

I am sorry no-one has answered.

Infallibility of the imams comes from the Quran, the sunnah of the prophet (saww) and from logic.

The Quran:

4:59 "Obey Allah, Obey the messenger and those in authority"

76:24 "and do not obey from amongst them the sinners"

15:39-40 [Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all

Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

From the Quran we find that we have to obey "those in authority". Who are these people? The Quran also tells us not to obey sinners... therefore whoever we have to obey must be infallible.

In the Quran, even shaytan recognises that he cannot lead the perfectly chosen devout servants.

If you look logically, how can humans be left without an infallible guide to interpret the Quran in the correct way and solve humanitys problems?
If the Quran and the sunnah was enough, there wouldnt be 73 sects of Islam today.
Amongst the 4 imams of fiqh in Sunni Islam, there are over 200 differences in the rules of Salat alone.

If you look at the narrations of the prophet (saww), he has said on many occassions which has been narrated by sunni and shi'ite scholars both that he is leaving behind the quran and the ahlul bayt as the two weighty things for the muslims to hold onto after he dies to keep on the straight path.

He would not be able to pair the quran and the ahlul bayt together as two things worth holding onto if the quran was infallible and the ahlul bayt were prone to make errors.

I hope that this has gone some way to answering the question you have posed.

If you would like to discuss it further, feel free to inbox me and i can forward you some articles on the issue.

Salaams

Mustafa
