salaams brothers and sisters,
i came across this fantastic document which discusses the existence of God from a scientific perspective and also has some brilliant anecdotes which will inshallah help some people to understand the truth about their existence.
A SCIENTIST ANSWERS: IS THERE A GOD?
By Harold G. Coffin, Ph.D

“SIGNS OF THE TIMES”
Large segments of the civilised world are atheistic because they believe there is no evidence of God, no demonstration of His existence. Others equally intelligent and educated are convinced of God’s reality. It is a paradox that a cosmonaut can return from a space trip claiming not to have found God and denying His existence, whereas an astronaut following soon after in orbit flight says the experience confirmed and strengthened his belief in God.
Is there a God? What evidence do we have? Can we put Him in a test tube? Can we prove His existence?
As biologists work with living things, they find that organisms are constantly striving to reach a specific destiny. Every animal or plant sets out to become the organism which it is supposed to be, and when any obstacle arises, it goes around the obstacle.
Over fifty years ago, Dr. H. V. Wilson performed a classic experiment with a simple organism. He squeezed a sponge through a fine-meshed bolting cloth into a jar of sea water, separating it into its individual cells. He then examined the isolated cells under a microscope. Attracted to each other, two cells would join to two more cells, small groups to small groups, until finally all the cells joined together again into a ball.
To his surprise, in a relatively short time this ball of cells actually began to form itself into a small sponge colony, composed of several different kinds of cells. These cells had been completely disrupted when squeezed through the bolting cloth, but were able to rearrange themselves and to produce all the various types of cells necessary to form a sponge colony. Somehow, each one had the information, the control necessary to guide it toward reaching the common goal of becoming a sponge again. (See Edmund W. Sinnot, The Biology of the Spirit, 1955).
A cut geranium shoot put into a pot of soil will grow into another complete geranium plant. The stem will develop roots at one end. The cells at the other end, which appear similar, do not initiate the development of roots. They have the information necessary to develop into cells leading to the formation of the shoot.
The planarian flatworm, only about half an inch long, has remarkable ability to regenerate. If the body is cut across the width, the head portion will develop a tail and the lower will grow a head, making two whole worms.
It may be possible to explain in part abilities such as these by chemical or electrical polarity, or biochemical or physiological gradients, but whatever the final scientific explanation, one is constantly faced with a guidance system outside of and greater than the organisms. This is God.
Animal navigation has engaged the attention of scientists for many years. A few ago a German biologist discovered that the honeybees are able to navigate by the sun and communicate their information to one another. When a honeybee discovers a rose in somebody’s backyard, it has impressed upon its brain the relationship of that flower garden to the hive and to the sun. It comes back to the hive and performs a dance on the vertical comb that hangs in the hive.
This dance is roughly in the form of a figure eight, the crucial part of the dance occurring at the waist of the eight. The bee will perform that part of the dance at an angle the same number of degrees from vertical that the angle of the flower garden is from the point on the horizon that is nearest the sun. If it dances on a horizontal plane, the waist of the figure eight will point directly toward the rose garden. It appears that the bees obtain information on direction, distance, and type of flowers from the bee and its dance. (See Karl von Fitsch, Bees, Their Vision, Chemical Senses, and Language, 1950.)
Some birds also migrate by using the sun. They have a built-in clock which makes allowance in their brains for the movement of the sun so that they are able to keep travelling in one general direction. A few years ago, a student of birds became curious to know if night-migrating birds use stars for navigational aids. He put some European warblers in cages and noticed that during the normal migration time these birds would flutter and face toward the direction in which they would normally travel if free.
When he took them inside a room where they could not see the night sky, they became disoriented and did not face predominantly in any one direction. Placing the birds in a planetarium, he projected on the dome a star pattern to that of Lake Baykal in Siberia, the birds assumed a direction that would have taken them back to Germany if they were actually flying from Siberia.
He brought another species of warbler into the planetarium. These normally flew in a south-easterly direction until they were north of Egypt. There they would turn south up the Nile River. In the planetarium, they fluttered toward the South-east just as expected. Gradually he altered the star pattern on the planetarium dome to resemble the night sky north of Egypt. Again the birds changed their orientation as expected. (See Joel Carl Welty, The Life of Birds, 1962.)
It is reasonable to say that this impression of the sky pattern on the minds of the birds came not by chance evolutionary development, but from an overall Deity.
The most marvellous of all creations is the human body, and the most complex organ of that body is the brain. Some unusual discoveries have been made by Dr. Wilder Penfield, of the Montreal Neurological Institute.
Taking an electric probe-an electrode- he gently excites certain parts of the brain with a slight electrical stimulus. Under local anaesthesia, the individual is able to talk and tell the surgeon what he has experienced. In this experimentation, Dr. Penfield discovered that a relatively small area on each side of the brain contains the memories. One student of the brain gives the following experience from Dr. Penfield’s research:
“One young man saw himself with his cousins at their home in South Africa. It seemed to him he could hear them laughing and talking. The scene was at least as clear to him as it would have been had he closed his eyes and ears moments after the event, even though it had occurred years earlier.
“One woman heard the voice of her small son in the yard outside her kitchen, accompanied by the neighbourhood sounds of hooting cars, barking dogs, and shouting youngsters. One patient listened to an orchestra in the operating room, playing a number that she did not herself know how to sing or play, and that she only vaguely recalled having heard before. Another patient heard the singing of a Christmas song in her church at home in Holland. She seemed to be there in the church and was moved again by the beauty of the occasion, just as she had been on that Christmas Eve years earlier.” – Dean E. Wooldridge, The Machinery of the Brain, page 166.
Apparently the brain stores a complete sequence of all life’s experiences. It is as though a mental tape recorder makes a permanent recording, and electrical stimulus can play it back – even forgotten experiences. Did God’s original plan for man include total recall?
While reading this article, you are aware of your surroundings – the lights, the people, and the arrangement of the room. Many things are coming into your mind at this moment; they are all being recorded. You will not be able to recall all of it later, but you will be able to remember some details. But it is still all there: a complete record, recorded permanently in two small areas of the brain.
Dr. Edward Kessel, University of California biologist, makes this statement: “If only all scientists would consider the evidence of science here described with the same honesty and lack of prejudice with which they evaluate the results of their own research; if only they would let their intellects rule their emotions; then they would be compelled to acknowledge that there is a God. This is the only conclusion that will fit the facts. To study science with an open mind will bring one to the necessity of a First Cause, Whom we call God.” (“Let’s Look at Facts without Bent or Bias”. in The Evidence of God in an Expanding Universe)
Do these evidences prove that there is a God? No. They are evidences, not proof. We have not been able to put God into a test tube and conclusively demonstrate His existence. God is too great for us to fully comprehend.
You may recall the story of three blind men who touched three different parts of an elephant and came to three different conclusions about an elephant. Why? Because they could not see the whole. This is our problem. Our knowledge and comprehension are too narrow to encompass the whole that is God.
Findings of modern science were already in God's word
A common concept is that science and religion are two opposite ends of the pendulum. But the two are really connected.
The scientific knowledge mentioned in the holy book Qur’an 1,400 years ago has proven to be true. It not only is an open challenge to those who know this book but also provides a great area of research for those who can think, ponder and assess the knowledge with an open mind.
Humans are superior to other creations of Allah (God) due to the mere fact that they can think, have free will and are able to see things with reasoning and proofs. Scientific and religious knowledge becomes one and the same if one looks beyond the obvious and reaches out to where the depths of knowledge has no limits.
Viewpoints are ideas of different people in various times and ages and have no authentic value. Hypothesis is the initial state in which a concept or idea evolves. Popular hypothetical theories may get discarded over time even though they may have been accepted as facts at one point.
Much of the scientific research and discoveries of today are merely confirmation of the truth that is revealed in the Qur’an.
Allah says in Q 27:93, "Praise be to Him who will soon show you His signs so that you shall know them and thy Lord is mindful of all that you do."
In man's endeavour to unravel the truth, if he is truthful in his intentions and effort, Allah will support him and open the doors of knowledge. Whenever the going gets tougher, He lends assistance and help and makes the unveiling of facts and truth easier. But purity of intention is the key. It is no wonder that small keys open big doors.
Islam gives a lot of importance to knowledge. The Qur’an tells us that Adam was favoured over angels by virtue of knowledge given to him by Allah. Knowledge is a mark of honour.
The very first word revealed to prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was "Read, read in the name Allah. Allah who created you, created you from a drop of clotted blood."
Here we see the biology/embryology in the Qur’an. Check the verse 23:12-14 where it talks about the development of the foetus in the womb, in that time and age when there was no means to know embryological facts in such detail.
Modern science has proven that mountains have deep roots. Q 78:6-7, "Have we not made earth as a bed and the mountains as pegs?" Mountains play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth.
Q 16:15, "And He has set firm mountains in the earth so it would not shake with you." The role of mountains as stabilizers for earth in the framework of plate tectonics was first understood in the late 1960s.
Science has recently discovered that where two seas meet, there is a barrier and each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density. When the Mediterranean Sea enters the Atlantic Ocean over the Gibraltar sill, it moves several hundred kilometres with its own warm saline and less-dense characteristics. There are large waves, strong currents and tides in the seas, but they do not mix.
Q 55: 19-20, "He has set free two seas meeting together. There is a barrier between them and they do not transgress."
Or Q 25:53, "He is the one who set free two kinds of water, one sweet and palatable and the other salty and bitter. He has made between them a barrier and a forbidden partition."
A French oceanographer -- after a lot of diving expeditions and analysis -- reached the same conclusion. He was dumbfounded when a learned person showed him the verse. That prompted him to learn more about Islam and the Qur’an, which has facts written out clearly. As a result, he needed no more proof to enter Islam, a way of life to inner peace that we all are striving for.
Real happiness and peace is achieved through submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this universe.
Q 13:28, "Truly in remembering God do hearts find rest." It explains why some who may have all the material comforts of life may still be unhappy, since money can't buy peace of mind and happiness.
Every able-minded adult owes it to himself to know the creator and have a direct relationship with Him.
The straight path is the shortest distance between two points and Islam is the way of life. It is simple and realistic to understand. A genuine desire to explore the truth is all we need.
BELIEF IN THE EXISTENCE OF ALLAH
Let us search for true happiness. Let us search and think. To start with, let us contemplate on the human existence and the environment around us. How did the world come into existence? Where are we headed?
The painting could not have been painted without an artist.
The machine could not have been designed without a designer.
The book could not have been written without an author.
1. Oxygen is one of the gases forming the atmosphere. It is essential for human life. Without oxygen neither human beings nor animals can survive on earth. It constitutes 21 percent of the atmosphere that is the most suitable percentage that can allow life on earth. Should this percentage change, decrease or increase a little, the whole life system will gout of order and life will come to an end. Who set this system in order and made oxygen in this perfect percentage to preserve life and prevent its collapse? Could this be the work of chance? No, certainly not. It is the work of the All-knowing, Wise Creator Allah.
2. The temperature at the surface of the sun, the source of light and heat, is 12,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5700 degree Centigrade). The sun’s distance from the earth is approximately 150,000,000 kilometres. This distance is very suitable for the light and heat to reach earth adequately, allowing man, plants and animals to live and flourish. If the heat of the sun doubles, we would burn and change into ashes and if it decreases by 50 per cent we would freeze to death.
3. If the waters of the ocean were sweet they would have been bad smelling and unhealthy with no chance of life on earth. It is the salt of the ocean which prevents the water from becoming putrid and bad-smelling. Chloride and Sodium combine together to form salt, without which life would cease to exist. Who made the water of the oceans salty so that it remains clean? Who combined chloride and sodium to produce the edible salt?
4. The revolving earth takes 24 hours to rotate on its axis. One rotation completes a day and night, and the speed is ideal for plants, animals and the human species to exist on the earth’s surface. If the earth was to rotate or revolve faster than its present speed then everything would fold up like a pack of cards. Who made it’s motion suitable for the benefit of man and other creatures? Who set all these things in a perfectly balanced order and faultless motion? Could this all be termed haphazardly? Certainly not, because it all speaks of divine planning and evaluation.
Scientists assert that oxygen levels have remained at roughly 21% of the atmosphere for 200 million years, whereas they should have fluctuated widely according to some geochemical models of the atmosphere. Were oxygen levels to rise above 25%, spontaneous fires would break out; if they dropped below 15%, many higher life-reforms would suffocate. The fundamental unity of the pattern that permeates, the entire universe, is by itself a proof of the fact that the universe, as a whole is the handiwork of the same Designer, Creator or as Voltaire puts it, the Cosmic Mind. It is also a proof of His omnipotence how gigantic is the solar system and how tiny is an atom, yet the unity of their design and structure is simply marvellous. In his book ‘ Introduction to Evolution’ Dr. Paul Moody writes : “ The more
I study science the more I am impressed with the thought that this world and universe have a definite design-and a design suggests a designer. It may be possible to have a design without a designer, a picture without an artist, but my mind is unable to conceive of such a situation.”
Birth of a test-tube baby is no doubt an epoch-making achievement of science; and so is man’s landing on the moon. The fact however, remains that natural laws have never been transgressed. A child is the by-product of the union of paternal sperm and maternal ova. Thus, the womb was simply replaced by a test-tube as an artificial nursery instead of a natural one. Creation of Adam without parents and the birth of Jesus without a father are yet par excellence marvels of creation. And moreover the fact remains that the moment Armstrong imprinted, amidst the halo of a baffling spectacle, his first step on the moon, he ejaculated: ‘I see the Glory of God.’ And he uttered it thrice.
EGG - PROOF THAT GOD EXISTS
Belief in Allah is extremely important in Islam. Sometimes when we are asked to prove the existence of God, we tend to get lost and not quite sure how to answer.
Imam Ja’fer as-Sadiq (a.s.) was the grandson of Imam Ali Ibnul Husein Ibne Abi Talib (peace be upon them all).
One day a man came to him and asked: O son of the Prophet (pbuhf)! is there a God?
Imam: Of course there is a God.
Man: But how can I be absolutely sure?
Imam: Make yourself comfortable and relax.
There was a small boy walking by with an egg in his hands. The Imam took the egg from him and hid it in his palms.
Imam (to the man): Tell me something. Is it possible to keep two different colours of liquid in one container without any barrier and yet they don’t get mixed?
The Imam showed him an egg and asked, “What’s this then? Who’s got this power to do this?”
When the egg is hatched, you see a beautiful and a colourful bird coming out of the egg.
Have you seen anyone coming out of the egg or entering the egg to suggest that someone’s been inside the egg to paint the bird?
Imam: That is Allah. You recognise your Creator through His creations and His Might.
One day a man asked hazrat Ali (a.s.): Is there a God?
Hazrat Ali (a.s.): Of course there is.
Man: How do I know?
Hazrat Ali (a.s.) pointed towards the footprints of a camel on the sand and asked, “What do these footprints tell you?”
Man: That a camel has gone past from here.
Imam: But did you see the camel passing by?
Man: No, but the footprints are good enough to indicate the passing of the camel from here.
Imam: So when you see the sun, moon, stars, trees, animals, etc. doesn’t your mind tell you that since all these things are there, there must be someone who has created them all? And that is your Creator, Allah.
Imam Muhammad al-Baquir (a.s.) was the great grandson of hazrat Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.).
One day a man came to him and asked him a very interesting question.
Man: Please tell me if how much power has Allah given to us human beings? Is it that He has given us absolute power, no power at all or limited power?
Imam: Please stand up. (The man stands up). Now keep your one foot in the air. (He does that).
Imam: Now keep your other foot in air.
Man: I cannot do that. I will fall down.
Imam: Allah has given you this much power. You are not given the complete power and you are not made powerless either.
A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. Barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of ALLAH, the barber said: "I don't believe that ALLAH exists."
Why do you say that?" asked the customer
"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that ALLAH doesn't exist. Tell me, if ALLAH exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If ALLAH existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving ALLAH who would allow all of these things."
The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument.
The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop.
Just after he left the barbers shop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair & an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back and entered the barbershop again and he said to the barber: "You know what? Barbers do not exist."
"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!"
"No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards like that man outside."
"Ah, but barbers DO exist! What happens is, people do not come to me."
"Exactly!" affirmed the customer. "That's the point! ALLAH, too, DOES exist! What happens, is, people don't go to Him and do not look for Him. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."
What is the difference between nature and God? If we sow a seed then the tree of that particular seed grows. Then what did God do in that case? Similarly, in the case of rain. We know the procedure of rain. Then what’s the work of God?
ANSWER: When you take a car (in perfect condition), put in petrol and switch the engine on, it starts running. Then what did the Ford or Nissan or Mitsubishi Company does in this case? You know the process how the said engine works, then what's the work of its manufacturer?
